What / Why / How it's going (on) about

Overview^

“Ego” seeks to create a practical means for keeping dream journals, leaving it up to the user to decide if (s)he uses wants to share them or not.

It targets ubiquitous, mass-produced, widespread and far-reaching consumer products and social networks – employing technology that is either open-source or freely available. The choice of platforms for initial development – the Iphone and Facebook -  has to do with how popular these are right now, but it’s not our intention to limit “ego” to these particular systems.

The user is given the option of listening to brainwave entrainment while sleeping.Upon waking up, or when the user so desires, (s)he can narrate a journal entry into the Iphone's speakerphone input. When recording stops, the user decides whether it's a day or a night dream and inserts tags. The audio recording is converted to text, which is kept online for either sharing or personal record.

In a nutshell,  an implementation of “ego” in any given platform, should:

  • Contribute to what could one day be called, a “Taxonomy of collective thinking”, and of syncronistic thinking or events, through the correlation of dreams, ideas and occurrences.
  • Make people pay attention, and keep tab on their dreams and ambitions.
  • Help in keeping a journal, without necessarily having to write.
  • Try to help those struggling with insomnia and improve sleep in general. The effectiveness of binaural brainwave entrainment has been questioned, but since it seems to work for some people, we see no reason not to include it in our project.

Why^

Dreaming is an activity experienced by humans and believed to occur in other species. The scope, intensity and intrisic qualities of dreams are commonly agreed to vary immensly in human beings: some decide to  keep journal narratives of dreams, usually for personal and creative use. The discipline required to do so and to keep in tab with the mindset of the dream as to be able to narrate it, is not easy considering the act of writing is always (?) practiced in the waking state. Being the tool developing animals that we are, we’re bound to find extensions of ourselves to help us.

This is what we believe to be facts. From this point on, there is an implicit agenda to what is being written, described in the next 11 paragraphs are day-dream entries from an “ego” database, tagged “nightmare”:

Ego seeks to keep the discussion of pressing issues alive, above and beyond the numbness that mass-media, willingly or not, casts over us. We, like many other people, believe that discussion of issues and ways to address them are just as important as being happy with life, with ourselves and with others. In tune with both our waking and sleeping life.

The issue of whether to blatantly share our most intimate realm with the remainder of the online world (or the possible temptation to do) so can lead us to reflect upon what is going on in and outside us all. As for mentally active… “dreaming”, which is what we usually call suggestions that may be as positive as they are impractical – we tend to share them, as if to look for likeness in the other. This can be linked to the spawning of utopian thinking and intentional communities. A part of our species earns kudos for trying to improve and seek balance and that is a good thing, but the fact remains that the grim reality of our relationship with the environment in the year 2009 is just impossible to ignore.
